I admittedly usually read at least some fantasy, but it’s usually either an author I already know and love (Sarah J. Maas or Rebecca Roanhorse) or it’s an urban fantasy series with a strong romantic plot that in my head I still consider a romance even if I categorize it differently in my statistics. But for a very long time, I have been steering clear of actual complex worlds and I am hoping that I can sort of change that this year. However, I have acquired a lot of books that fall into the SFF genres and so I really need your help in deciding what books to prioritize because I have so many choices I already own! So please leave me your opinions so I know where to even begin.

- The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
- Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo
- Red Rising by Pierce Brown – which I know is one of Dani’s favorites!
- The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
- The Black God’s Drums by P. Djeli Clark (please excuse the lack of accents in the name, but Apple and I are continuing our fight since I can no longer figure out how to have the accent options appear…)
- Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey
- The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith
- An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard
- The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemisin
- The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin
- The Stone Sky by N. K. Jemisin – my only issue with this one is that I’ll need to reread the first two before I can pick this one up.
- Jade City by Fonda Lee
- The Ruin of Kings by Jenn Lyon
- The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier
- A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine
- Middlegame by Seanan McGuire
- Sleeping Giants by Sylvain Neuvel
- Realm of Ash by Tasha Suri
- The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri
I’m fairly certain I own even more than this, but at least this is a solid starting point for fantasy I know I have access to. Please still feel free to recommend me books you think I’ll love outside of this list, but I’m truly begging for guidance on where to begin with this list! To be fair, we probably all know that I’ll be continuing my Wheel of Time read but at some point, I really do want to venture beyond this series!

I remember enjoying The Bear and the Nightingale but it has been a long time since I read it and I never got around to continuing the series (story of my life). I will say I really enjoyed The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, it was an investment reading, I feel like it took forever, but I was really absorbed in the book and couldn’t put it down. I think everyone seemed to enjoy The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and I recommend it. It just loved how different it was to anything I’d read up to that point. I think it was my first venture into adult sci fi as it felt like a bit of a boys club on the shelves at the bookstore.

See, I feel like all fantasy is pretty much an investment and I just haven’t had the energy for it in the last several years. So I’m hoping I’ll slowly be able to find my way back to all of these books I’ve been collecting for ages!

Ooooo, so the Sleeping Giants trilogy is a fun one to listen to on audio! My husband and I listened to them all during road trips and really enjoyed them. And also yes to Red Rising! You haven’t read that yet?? It’s so good! And I think my sister said the audiobooks were solid, too. I also really need to read The Bear and the Nightingale, Realm of Ash, and The Jasmine Throne, but I think I’m finally going to pick up Jade City soon. I’ve heard amazing things and have been meaning to read that trilogy for AGES! I’m loving this SFF kick for us both right now!!

I am too! Although, for me, it’s very clearly limited to one series at the moment. Lol. I think at this point I just need to speed through it so I can actually read other things. You’ve been telling me to read Red Rising forever, but I just keep dragging my feet!!

HELLO. Please add The Ninth House to the top of your list, especially audio.
I still need to read The Fifth Season and I’m always down for a buddy read if you’re interested!

I have the Ninth House audiobook!!
Ooh, yes, let’s try and do a buddy read of The Fifth Season! NK Jemisin is honestly too smart for me, so it will be amazing to have someone reading it with me. Lol
