Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon

In shocking news, I did manage to start reading at exactly 8 am yesterday and started with One True Pairing by Cathy Yardley. I went to bed at midnight though so in addition to the eight hours I lost right there, I probably lost about 2 or 3 hours throughout the day as well. But I still think I did really well. My goal was to finish up many of the books on my Currently Reading list on Goodreads and I wouldn’t necessarily say I made the best progress on that, but I also didn’t do the worst. So let’s get started.

One True Pairing by Cathy Yardley

As I mentioned, I started with an audiobook of One True Pairing by Cathy Yardley, which is the second book in her Fandom Hearts series. This one stars Hailey Frost, the snarky woman with a heart of gold who dresses like a pin up girl, and Jack Reese, a star on the (fictional) show Mystics. They encounter one another when Jack flees a fan event after being molested by a VIP. This book was delightful and I really love the series. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the books in the series!

Trashed by Mia Hopkins

Once I finished One True Pairing, I still wasn’t ready for reading with my eyeballs so I turned on Trashed and, um, for the record, I told someone the other day that Thirsty really wasn’t that explicit and either I lied or Trashed is a league beyond Thirsty. This book is explicit, but also, I think I maybe liked it more? I really liked Eddie as a character. But I will say the beginning didn’t really work for me because I had NO idea why Carmen was making the choices she was. Specifically one choice. I was just like… WHAT. But anyway, setting that aside, I really liked this one. Also, Mia was on the Wicked Wallflowers Club podcast and I really enjoyed her interview and would recommend you check it out!

It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas

I started rereading this book last year and just left it languishing on my currently reading shelf because I got to this scene where Lilian was drunk and Westcliff was about to have sex with her anyway and I was MAD. So… I put it off. And ultimately because of that and some other things that I didn’t love, I dropped my star rating on this book from a 5 to a 3. What’s wild about this is that I read this book for the first time in March of 2017 so someone please explain how 2017 me just loved this book so much?? To give past me credit, I did say this: I hate the threat of rape being used as a plot device, but I did love the story. I adore Marcus and Lillian so much.

Anyway, this re-read made me more anxious about rereading Devil in Winter, but like, I WANT to. We’ll see.

Collision Point by Lora Leigh

So, back in September after being approved for Lethal Nights, the latest book in the Brute Force series, I went out and bought the first two books in the series. This was clearly a terrible idea because despite starting this book at the beginning of September, I just finished it. I just… I don’t understand what was happening? Like, the book made so little sense to me, I felt stupid. As for what it’s about… I… Amara was kidnapped and now she has amnesia. She was in a relationship with Riordian who was her bodyguard but he almost died rescuing her. Now they’re dreaming about one another and just… what? I just don’t understand. Also Russian mobsters. Idk.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

I had started the first little bit of this audiobook for Spookathon, which I would up not participating in so I decided I should go ahead and read it for this instead. I think Ng is obviously a brilliant writer and I also don’t understand why the meat of the plot doesn’t start until you’re halfway through in literary fiction. Like, just what is the point of lit fic and why do I keep trying to read it? Anyway, this book is slow but beautiful and if you like commentary about society, you may enjoy it. I mean, most people did enjoy it. I gave it 4 stars, I just also know this book is not my kind of book at all.

Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon

This is another audiobook I picked up on a whim. I love my Audible Escape package. I complain about it sometimes, but like, it always comes through for me. Anyway, basically me trying this was me giving in to the hype and me not liking it is because I don’t tend to go for over the top bananas plots. Also I’m still confused. At the same time though, I wouldn’t be surprised if I wind up trying another. I’m like intrigued but not obsessed at this point and I want to understand the hype! (This is sci-fi alien/human romance and there is some weird binary thing happening so I wondered if that bugged anyone?)

Did you participate in Dewey’s? If so, what did you read? Any new favorites?

xx
