Try a Chapter Tag: Fantasy Edition

I just finished reading Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid and even though I’m in the middle of like six other things, none of them are quite calling to me. I can’t quite decide what I’m in the mood for either and lately I’ve been to the bookstore a few too many times so I have a lot of books to choose from. Not to mention the books that are still hanging out on my shelf waiting for me to read them. So I thought I would try a few different titles and see what sticks and makes me want to spend my July 4th reading. First up, we have Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett.

Foundryside by Robert Jackson Bennett

The first chapter ended on page 12 and I am intrigued and would like to keep going. I have absolutely no idea what’s happening other than our main character, Sancia, has the ability to put her hand on things and know things about them. Super helpful summary of her magic, I realize. Anyway, also she’s a thief who has been hired to thieve one specific thing for $20,000 of whatever this money system is. And that item is by the sea, I guess? Idk. I’m intrigued so far though! A strong contender for today’s read, tbh.

The Last Wolf by Maria Vale

A paranormal romance I’ve heard good things about, but don’t actually know what it is about beyond what I read (and forgot) that it says on the back. I also know it is fairly short and the paperback is super floppy which is my favorite. Well, I read the prologue and the first two chapters because I could NOT stop at the end of the first one. I’m extremely intrigued and really wanted to just keep going. So far, what I know is that a shifter showed up and Silver has the option to stay with the shifter or be submissive to her alpha pair for the rest of her life. She’s not keen on that option but the shifter is super wounded so it might not be a great idea to choose him either. However, I’m guessing the shifter is our hero and she did choose to stay with him so we’ll see.

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

First of all, I got this book for free because it’s pretty damaged, but mostly I picked it up because it will fulfill the dragons square on The Ripped Bodice Summer Bingo board, thereby giving me my first bingo! So let’s see what I think. Okay, I didn’t make it very far in this one. The writing style is just not working for me at the moment. It’s set during the Napoleonic Wars and is written in that style that just requires too much brain power for me to be willing to exert at the moment. But soon because I do really want that bingo!

Shadow and Ice by Gena Showalter

I must say that I do love this cover a whole, whole bunch. But okay, let’s get to the actual reading part. Wow, so the prologue to this was long and I was like, kind of intrigued, but also like ?? I’m not into battles really and this was like God style Hunger Games, which just feels like someone else’s cup of tea. But the end of chapter one??? I’m SO IN. Essentially the “gods” that are set to Earth to fight to the death for their kingdom to get to have the newly discovered realm, but somehow a Viking (aka a native?) defeats the gods and freezes them. Then we fast forward to modern day and Vale and her sister, Nola, are stranded and lost when they stumble across an ice cave where these “gods” are frozen in time. Vale is super intrigued by Knox and he blinked! I would really like to continue this one and now I’m torn between it and The Last Wolf.

Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan

So I picked this up this morning because I’ve been intrigued by it and am IN LOVE with the naked book. However, I’ve heard super mixed things about it, but I just am really, really in the mood for fantasy right now so let’s give it a shot. Um… So we got an IMMEDIATE death and an immediate look at the villain I think is the sort of love interest? I don’t actually know much besides blood magic and our main character can talk to the gods and they respond. I am intrigued, but I don’t think I’m more intrigued than I am by my other two contenders.

Alright, so I think I’m going to keep going with Shadow and Ice, solely because that’s the more recent book that I tried. What are you reading today?

xx

  1. Your commentary on these chapters is hilarious. I really need to read my copy of The Last Wolf soon, and you’ve definitely got me intrigued by Shadow and Ice!
