Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag

I thought I’d do something a little different today and do this tag. I really do love this one! I think I’ve done it two years now? Anyway, here are my answers to a few questions!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2019.

Daisy Jones & the Six
cover of Daisy Jones & the Six featuring a woman whose face is partially obscured by her dark hair face on, but with her eyes mostly closed

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. It’s honestly one of my new favorite books of ALL time. I love it so much and I’m never going to get over how perfect I find it. The characters are compelling and feel so real. They are absurdly flawed. The narration is INCREDIBLE on audio. I need the television show now, more for the music than the people, but like… Yeah. Daisy Jones and the Six is one of my favorite books of all time now.

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2019.

If we’re talking non-romance sequels, Storm of Locusts by Rebecca Roanhorse, which I thought was genuinely incredible. The story feels complete enough that the wait for book three is not going to actually kill me too, which is part of why I appreciate it so much. Don’t get me wrong, I’m anxious af for the series to continue, but I feel like we left off at a place where I’m fine with waiting the extended period of time until book three comes. And if we’re talking romance sequels, I assure you, that’s not what you want to do because my list would be EXTENSIVE.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Lol, so many. l still haven’t read On the Come Up by Angie Thomas, which is just ridiculous, and I still haven’t read King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo! Those are releases from January and February and I’ve owned them both since they released. Ridiculous.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

SAPPHIRE FLAMES by Ilona Andrews. I NEED IT.

5. Biggest disappointment.

Probably 99 Percent Mine, though it shouldn’t have. Or When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton, which I still enjoyed, but was disappointed that it didn’t give me everything I wanted.

6. Biggest surprise.

Hmm… Maybe Polaris Rising by Jessie Mihalik. Just because sci-fi romance was not a thing I knew I would be into, but I am INTO it and am so excited for Bianca’s book!!

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Lol, so Jessie Mihalik is definitely on my list. But also, Rebecca Roanhorse and Ada Harper. Plus, omg, Kennedy Ryan!! I just discovered Kennedy Ryan this year and I love her writing so much. Her books kill me but in the best way. And I was really pleasantly surprised by Lenora Bell and I can’t stop reading Suzanne Brockmann right now. And then we’ve got Casey McQuiston and my weird love of Laura Kay! So many new authors I’ve discovered already this year. It’s ridiculous.

8. Newest fictional crush.

Oh dear. Um… Honestly, Johan from A Prince on Paper by Alyssa Cole came to mind first. But also I am in love with Kai from Trail of Lightning and Storm of Locusts. Or maybe I’m in love with Maggie who is in love with Kai so I’m also in love with Kai? WHO KNOWS. But I love Kai. Actually both Kai and Johan have this act that they put on and kind of pretend to be more badass than they are, when inside they are complex (obviously) and actually kind and protective and great teddy bears. SPEAKING OF BEARS, Alexei from Wolf Rain. I already loved him though so I don’t know if that actually counts.

9. Newest favorite character.

Can I just make a list? I mean, I’ve already mentioned Maggie from Trail of Lightning/Storm of Locusts, but also, would die 10/10 times for any of the women in Daisy Jones and the Six. Memory from Wolf Rain is absolutely fantastic and then we’ve got Hattie from Brazen and the Beast. Plus Hazel from Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating. And Greer and Alex both from Best of Luck. Oh dear, this is getting too long and I probably haven’t mentioned a fraction of the characters I should have. Like Jared from Block Shot!! I love him. I do not have a crush on him because he would eat me alive, but I LOVE him. Okay, I’ve really got to stop now.

10. Book that made you cry.

The Names They Gave Us by Emery Lord literally made me SOB. I wish I was being dramatic, but I am being so literal. I was crying so hard I couldn’t see the words on the page. I loved this book, but it broke me. It’s so, so good though. Just, you know, CW for our main character’s mom having cancer.

11. Book that made you happy.

I’m going to go with the book that made me laugh the most, which was Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. They are the most fabulous author and I loved this book so much. SO much. Definite CW for outing of characters, but like, the beginning of this book had me HOWLING with laughter. I think I teared up toward the end too. But for me, this book is outweighed toward the laughter because of how much I enjoyed it.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

The Gilded Wolves by Roshini Chokshi is a gorgeous book, but I couldn’t get into the contents of it so I ultimately passed it along. It was so pretty though.

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

Like, that are already on my shelves and are different than the books I mentioned earlier? Well, A Rogue by Night by Kelly Bowen is definitely one. I’d also like to complete the Troubleshooters series by Suzanne Brockmann now that I’m this invested by the end of the year.

So there you have it! What has been your favorite book of the year so far?

xx

  1. Ugh, Daisy Jones and the Six isn’t something I would ever normally pick up, but you might convince me yet! And I totally agree on Storm of Locusts. It was so good! And I promise to read the Hidden Legacy books before Sapphire Flames comes out!
